Thursday 6 August - Travelling to NYC

Chris booked a surprise trip for us a couple of months ago and has (very impressively) managed to keep every detail a complete secret from me.

Finally the day arrived and he bundled us into a Uber after work on Thursday. We travelled west, which confirmed my suspicions that we were on our way to Heathrow. We passed the sign for terminals 1, 2 and 3 and Chris tried to pretend that we were going to a train station rather than to the airport but then of course we turned into Terminal 5, which is basically the only terminal either of us goes to because most of the BA flights go from T5 and we like to collect BA points.

Into the airport Chris went to drop off our suitcase while I tried to sneak a peek at the departures board. Chris had said that we wouldn't have that much time in the BA lounge so I checked flights between about 18.30 and 19.30. The locations were like Rome, Copenhagen and Madrid - I was sure we would be going on a European city break.

We went through security and I was pretty mortified as Chris told everyone at the security desk, passport check and at the entrance to the BA lounge that I had no idea where I was travelling to and could they please keep it a secret. Plus points to BA staff (who incidentally I have loved since they gave us free champagne on our honeymoon flight) for humouring him and keeping the secret.

The lounge had a load of gin. I counted 5 varieties and Chris and I went for different ones in our G and T. DO NOT RECOMMEND WEIRD ORGANIC GIN. Not nice at all. Can't remember what one I went for but it wasn't organic and whatever chemicals were in it made it pretty good.

Because I had eaten very little that day, I went a bit mad in the BA lounge. I had like 4 plates of food and Chris tried to slow me down telling me that we would be eating food before too long. He implied that we would be eating when we landed but, as it turned out, we would be eating as soon as we got on the plane because it was LONG HAUL!

Exciting. Chris decided he would rather tell me where we were going himself rather than me finding out at the gate so he took his phone out and made a video of me guessing where we were going.

NYC! I've never been there before - in fact I haven't been to the states.

Super exciting. Chris took a lot of persuasion to let me see the tickets. I thought that this was because I was going business class and he was keeping it as another surprise and when I finally looked at the tickets they had the class as 'Club World'. I assumed that that meant economy but nope! When we got on the plane it was 747 and we were on the upper deck - 62A and 62B - which were cute business class seats facing each other.

The flight was about 7 hours though we were about an hour late leaving. We didn't really care though - we just chilled and enjoyed the time together.

On the flight I watched a movie that Chris recommended called Kingsmen or something and it was about spies. Not the kind of movie I would usually go for (bit of silly violence, heads exploding etc) but I really enjoyed it! Nice lesson that I should branch out and try new stuff.

On landing, we took a yellow cab to our hotel on West 57th, between 7th Avenue and 6th. I was amazed that they had a tv screen in the cab. Like, totally amazed.
